TL;DR: In the bustling streets of old Kolkata, Chintamoni's life takes a surprising turn when a mysterious man awakens her long-suppressed desires, leading her to discover both love and unexpected wealth.

In the heart of Kolkata, back in the day, hygiene wasn't top-notch. People washed clothes where they answered nature's call, and stepping on unpleasant stuff was common if you weren't careful. Uncovered drains lined the streets, and folks often did their morning business right there. Garbage piles in front of houses were usual, with cats, dogs, and crows fighting over leftovers. A crow stealing fish bones and messing up freshly washed clothes was a regular scene. Widows, especially Brahmin ones, considered crows a bad omen. If a crow sat on clean clothes, they'd wash them again, often exclaiming, "Oh, my wretched luck!"
Dogs and humans often clashed over discarded food in Kolkata's narrow lanes. A typical scene: a frail person searching through trash for food, while dogs surrounded him, growling. The person would swing a stick, cursing, to fend them off. Old houses had unique layouts. Entering through the front door led to a courtyard, surrounded by rooms. The kitchen floors were always wet, and housewives wiped their hands on their saris, making them damp. The sari's end was multipurpose: wiping sweat, tears, noses, lifting hot pots, cleaning plates, and even children's faces. Kids often had runny noses back then.
Ancient rules about cleanliness had evolved into illogical customs. Widows often caused a fuss to maintain household control. In north Kolkata, a family was fed up with their widowed mother's demands. Despite having fresh water, she insisted on cooking with Ganga water. Every month, they sent 10 rickshaws to fetch 20 pitchers of Ganga water. One room was dedicated to storing these pitchers. After settling, a thick layer of mud formed at the bottom. She drank the clear water on top, used it for cooking, and sprinkled it outside doors. The mud was used for scrubbing dishes.
Chintamoni's mother-in-law was also particular. She loved tea with jaggery. A widow in a Kayastha family, her customs were as strict as a Brahmin's. She passed these values to Chintamoni, who continued them even after her mother-in-law's death. The gap between proper sanitation and orthodox values impacted her domestic life.
In this setting, Chintamoni's routine life is disrupted by a mysterious man. He awakens desires she had long suppressed, leading her to discover both love and unexpected wealth. This encounter challenges her traditional beliefs and changes her life in ways she never imagined.
