Mahesh Babu’s cult film Athidhi returned to theatres with nostalgia hype… but the response has reportedly been underwhelming. Despite strong social media buzz from fans, the re-release struggled to generate the massive crowds seen for recent nostalgic re-runs of other star films.

Trade circles say the film’s darker tone, mixed original reception, and limited youth connect may have impacted turnout. While hardcore fans celebrated the vintage Mahesh swag and Mani Sharma’s music on the big screen again, the overall box office response remained “tepid.”

The trend also raises a bigger question: Are re-releases becoming oversaturated? Or do only films with strong meme culture + repeat-watch value work with Gen-Z audiences today?
