Shubman Gill hit (92) missed out on his maiden World Cup ton while Virat Kohli also stopped 12 runs shy of matching Sachin Tendulkar’s record 49 ODI centuries but their 189-run second wicket partnership, along with Shreyas Iyer’s 82 propelled India to 357/8 after Sri Lanka won the toss and invited them to bat.

In their chase, they didn’t know how to counter the terrific pace trio of record man Mohammed Shami (5/18), Mohammed Siraj (3/16) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/8) fell like nine pins, getting bundled out for 55 in 19.4 overs.Sri Lanka found early joy with the second-ball dismissal of skipper Rohit Sharma (4).
