India Textiles May Get Zero-Duty Access To US Market: What It Means

India’s textile sector could soon get zero-duty access to the US market, according to Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal — a move that may significantly boost exports.

If finalised, this would mean Indian textile products entering the US without import duties, making them more competitive against rivals like Vietnam, Bangladesh, and China.

The US remains one of India’s largest textile export destinations. Duty-free access could lower costs for American buyers and increase demand for Indian apparel, fabrics, and home textiles.

In simple terms: cheaper entry, bigger opportunity.

Why this matters: For Gen-Z entrepreneurs and job seekers, textiles aren’t just about fabric — they’re about employment. The sector is one of India’s largest job creators, especially for women in small towns and rural clusters.

There’s also a deeper trade angle. Zero-duty access often comes with negotiations around market access, standards, and broader trade balances. When tariffs drop, competition rises — and domestic industry must scale up fast to benefit.

If implemented effectively, this move could strengthen India’s position in global supply chains. But the real impact will depend on how quickly manufacturers expand capacity and improve quality.

Trade policy may sound distant — but for millions of workers in India’s textile hubs, it can shape wages, stability, and growth.
