Arshdeep Singh became only the third Indian bowler to claim a five-wicket haul in ODIs in South Africa on Sunday. The left armer claimed 5/37 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg to steer India to an-eight wicket win over the hosts for a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

He emulated Ashish Nehra (6/23 vs England in 2003 ODI World Cup) and Yuzvendra Chahal (5/22 vs South Africa in 2018) to claim five wickets in a 50-over game on South African soil.

South Africa won the toss and chose to bat expecting the pitch to aid spinners later in the game. But Arshdeep utilised the overcast conditions to the hilt, moving the ball both ways to surprise the Protean batters.

He removed Reeza Hendricks and Rassie van der Dussen to cripple the visitors in the second over of their innings. Arshdeep then removed Tony de Zorzi for 28 before the opener could get dangerous for his third wicket and then castled Heinrich Klaasen.

It was his fourth wicket in his opening spell of seven overs. He later returned to trap Andile Phehlukwayo plumb in front for a lbw. Phehlukwayo scored 33 and was the highest scorer of the South African innings.

His stupendous performance was backed up by Avesh Khan, who came into bowl at one change and picked up 4/27, for his best bowling figures in the ODI format.

South Africa were bundled out for 116 in 27.3 overs, their lowest ODI total at home. India reached their target in 16.4 overs to take a lead in the series. The second match is on Tuesday.
