Ton-up Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill helped India end Day 3 with a huge lead of 322 runs to take a commanding position in the ongoing third Test against England at the VCA Stadium in Rajkot on Saturday, February 17. Jaiswal slammed a magnificent ton while Gill notched up a brilliant unbeaten half-century as the duo joined hands to spearhead India’s incredible fightback in the game.
England came up with an excellent response to India’s first-innings total of 445 runs on Day 2 of the third Test as they headed to stumps on 207/2 with opener Ben Duckett unbeaten on 133. The visitors had a great opportunity to peg India back in the game and make the most of the absence of R Ashwin, who withdrew from the third Test following the conclusion of Day 2’s play due to a family emergency.
However, that was not the case as the Indian quartet of Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav joined hands to make life difficult for the England batters. England lost 8 wickets and could add only 112 runs to their total on Day 3 as Indian bowlers dominated the proceedings. Bumrah struck early to remove Joe Root before Kuldeep removed Duckett and Jonny Bairstow (0) in quick succession to trigger a mini England collapse.
Skipper Ben Stokes did hold on one end for quite some time with his fighting 41 but his resistance was brought to an end by Jadeja, who dismissed him in the 65th over before Siraj claimed the wickets of Ben Foakes (13) and Rehan Ahmed (6) in quick succession to leave England reeling on 314/8. England were eventually skittled out for 319 runs as Siraj finished with a four-wicket haul after running through the tail.
Thanks to the stellar effort from their bowlers, India managed to amass a healthy lead of 126 runs before Jaiswal and Gill helped them take the lead past the 300-run mark by the end of Day 3’s play.
England were the team with the advantage heading into Day 3 of the third Test in Rajkot. However, the hosts managed to retain control of the Test match by the end of the day’s play thanks to an excellent bowling performance followed by a batting masterclass from Jaiswal and Gill. Continuing his fine form in the series, Jaiswa notched up his third Test ton as he slammed a brilliant knock of 104 runs before getting retired hurt.
Jaiswal and Rohit got India off to a steady start but the Indian skipper lost his wicket cheaply on 19 after a successful DRS call from England. However, the left-hander remained unfazed on the other end as he displayed class and composure en route to his brilliant ton. Jaiswal combined with Gill, who scored an unbeaten 65 to add 155 runs before getting retired hurt.
India lost no.3 Rajat Patidar cheaply on a duck but night watchman Kuldeep Yadav ensured there was no more damage done as he combined with Gill to hold fort and add another 5 runs to the team’s total before the end of the day’s play. India finished with 196/2 at stumps, extending their lead to 322 runs as Gill looks set for another ton in the series.🏏✨
