🚨 Holy Dip Alert! 🚨 Sangam Waters at Maha Kumbh Contaminated with High BOD Levels!

TL;DR: Recent government data reveals that the sacred waters of Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, a focal point for the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela, have elevated Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels, making them unsafe for bathing. Despite these findings, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asserts that the water is fit for both bathing and ritual consumption.

Hey folks! 🌊✨

Guess what? The holy waters at Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, where millions are taking a dip during the Maha Kumbh Mela, have some alarming news. Recent government data shows that the water's Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) levels are higher than what's safe for bathing. BOD measures how much oxygen is needed to break down organic stuff in the water. More BOD means more yucky stuff, making the water not-so-great for a dip. Safe BOD levels are below 3 mg/L, but on February 19, it was a whopping 5.29 mg/L!

But wait, there's more! 🦠The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) told the National Green Tribunal that several spots in Prayagraj don't meet the main water quality standards for bathing because of high faecal coliform levels. This means there's poop bacteria in the water!

Despite all this, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath says the water is cool for bathing and even drinking. He mentioned in the state assembly that all drains around Sangam are sealed, and water is released only after cleaning. He claims the BOD is less than 3, and dissolved oxygen is around 8-9, making it safe for 'aachman' (ritual sipping).

But environmental experts aren't convinced. 🌱Himanshu Thakkar from the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers, and People (SANDRP) says it's the government's job to provide clean water for bathing. When the water isn't safe, there's a big risk of infections.

With the Maha Kumbh ending on February 26, it's super important to make sure the water is safe for everyone. 🛀💧

MediaFx believes that access to clean and safe water is a fundamental right. The government must prioritize the health and well-being of the masses over religious or political agendas. Ensuring safe water at such mass gatherings is not just a duty but a moral obligation.
