Due to the southwest monsoon, heavy rains are already lashing the Telugu states. The weather department has warned of moderate to heavy rainfall in both Telugu states today. A low-pressure area has formed over the Bay of Bengal at a height of 1.5 km above sea level. This depression is continuing from 3.1 km to 5.8 km above mean sea level along the 20-degree north latitude. The depression is expected to strengthen into a cyclone near the Odisha-North Andhra coast, and it may cross the Odisha coast near Puri today before gradually weakening.
In Andhra Pradesh, the IMD has issued a red alert for two districts and an orange alert for twelve districts. Moderate thunderstorms are expected in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Alluri Sitarama Raju, Eluru, Prakasam, and Nandyala districts. Light thunderstorms are likely in Kakinada, Konaseema, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, and NTR districts. Similarly, Guntur, Bapatla, Palnadu, Nellore, Kurnool, Anantapuram, Sri Sathya Sai, YSR, Annamayya, Chittoor, and Tirupati districts may experience light thunderstorms.
The low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal is moving towards Odisha. This has already caused heavy rains in the united Godavari and North Andhra districts, significantly impacting daily life. The torrential rains have led to flooding in low-lying areas. Schools in West Godavari, Konaseema, and Visakhapatnam districts have been declared closed today due to the rain. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to strong winds along the coast. The state government has deployed 3 SDRF and 2 NDRF teams for emergency rescue operations. Authorities are advising people not to cross flooded streams and canals in low-lying areas and to stay vigilant and take necessary precautions.
