TL;DRElection watchdog ADRâs Jagdeep Chhokar is sounding the alarm that under the Election Commissionâs rushed doorâtoâdoor âSpecial Intensive Revisionâ (SIR) in Bihar, millions of votersâespecially those who registered after 2003âmight be illegally removed from voter lists without proper process. The new rules need people to prove birth details for themselves and their parents, which is totally impractical, unfair, and a big danger to democracy đŻ #votingrights #Bihar

đłď¸ Why this is explosive news
đ The EC started this SIR on JuneâŻ24, 2025, telling everyone who joined voter rolls after JanâŻ1, 2003 to show proof of birth and citizenship. That means lakhs and crores could lose their vote đ˛ #ECIBiharRestartđ Jagdeep Chhokar says this is totally illegalâvoters canât be deleted without proper notice and hearings, as per old laws from 1951 and 1960 đ #VotingLawsđ The new form even demands parentsâ birth proof, which the EC has no right to ask forâthatâs work for the Home Ministry, not the EC đ¤Śââď¸ #RuleBreakđ The process has to finish in just one month, even though 30â40% of Biharâs people are migrant workers, itâs monsoon season, and many donât have papers đ§ď¸ #UnfairProcess
đ Huge rights at stake
â ď¸ The EC itself admitted that only 7.25% of the forms collected have been uploaded so far, while the deadline is just days away âłâ ď¸ For most ordinary people, birth certificates are rareâschool certificates often donât mention place of birth, and only ~25% of births were registered in Bihar even as late as 2007 đĽ #NoPapersâ ď¸ Chhokar called it ânot only wrong and unnecessary, itâs ridiculous,â and warned this could create second-class citizens who can never prove their rights đĄ #VoterSuppression
đĽ Political backlash heating up
đ´ Opposition parties like RJD, Congress, CPI(M-L) and others are furious. They are saying this is an âunconstitutional moveâ to remove poor people, Dalits, Muslims, and migrants from the voter list â #StandWithPeopleđ´ Tejashwi Yadav called it a plan to âsnatch the vote of the poorâ đ¤ #VoteSnatchđ´ Congress leaders are comparing this to the NRC exercise in Assam, where lakhs of people were left out đ #NRCFearđ´ Some have called it a âdacoity of democracy,â warning that free and fair elections are under threat âď¸ #SaveDemocracy
đľď¸ Why experts are worried
đ The EC canât just make up new rulesâlaws say any deletion must be based on clear reasons and people must get a chance to be heard đ ââď¸đ Only 2% of people have passports, which is the main birth proof the EC demands. Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, ration cardsâall these are not accepted as valid birth proof in this process đł #DocumentDisasterđ Even the data is hiddenâdocuments uploaded are only viewable by EC officers. Ordinary voters canât even see if they are being deleted đ #OpaqueProcess
â Whatâs next?
đ The Supreme Court will hear the case on JulyâŻ10, 2025, with multiple petitions challenging this exercise đď¸đ After that, the claims and objections period is supposed to happen in August, and the final list will be published by September 30 đ˘đ But many say the damage will already be done if people donât rush to defend their names now đ¨ #ActNow
đď¸ MediaFx POV
From the peopleâs perspective, this is a dangerous attack on democracy. Itâs the poor, workers, women, Dalits, minoritiesâthose who struggle dailyâwho will be hit hardest. Most donât have neat files of old papers. They have only their voice and their vote. If that too is taken away by fancy forms and sudden rules, then elections become a game for the rich and powerful. Every citizen must have the right to vote without fear. Letâs stand together so that no one is left out đŞ.
