But amidst all the glitz, there's a serious issue brewing. Many are urging the king to free political prisoners who've been locked up for ages.
Who are these prisoners?
Most of them belong to the Nepali-speaking Lhotshampa community. Back in the 1990s, tensions rose when the Bhutanese government pushed for a unified national identity, which didn't sit well with the Lhotshampas. This led to protests, and many were arrested. Fast forward to today, and about 32 of these folks are still behind bars, some for over 30 years!
What's life like for them?
Not great, to be honest. Reports highlight issues like food shortages and lack of medical care. One former prisoner, Madhukar Monger, who was released after 29 years, shared that conditions have worsened over time. It's a grim situation that needs attention.
Why should we care?
Bhutan often boasts about its "Gross National Happiness," but how can a nation be truly happy when some of its people are suffering unjustly? Releasing these prisoners would be a step towards genuine happiness and justice. Plus, it would show that Bhutan values human rights and is willing to make amends.
