A nationwide Bharat Bandh has been called on February 12, with trade unions claiming participation from nearly 30 crore workers across sectors.
The strike is being organised by central trade unions protesting labour reforms, privatisation moves, and contractualisation policies they say weaken worker protections. The scale makes it one of the biggest coordinated labour actions in recent years.
So what will be affected?
Public sector banks, insurance offices, coal mining, postal services, and some government departments may see disruption. State-run bus services in certain states could also be impacted depending on local union participation.
However, private banks and many private institutions are expected to function normally. Schools and colleges are likely to remain open in most areas, though attendance may vary if transport services are affected.
In simple terms: impact depends on where you live.
Why this matters: For Gen-Z students and young workers, this isn’t just about one day of inconvenience. It reflects deeper anxieties about job security, contract work, wages, and the future of labour protections in India’s changing economy.
There’s also a power equation at play. Governments argue reforms improve business flexibility and growth, while unions say workers are being asked to absorb the risk of economic shifts without adequate safeguards.
If you have travel plans, banking work, or official appointments, checking local advisories is recommended.
A bandh may last a day. But the debate over labour rights and economic direction is long-term.
