The nomination process for the prestigious Padma Awards 2025 has officially commenced this Wednesday. Prospective nominees have until September 15 to submit their applications online via the 'National Awards Portal.' This digital platform mandates all nominations to adhere to the specified format, encompassing comprehensive details about the nominees' exceptional contributions.
The Padma Awards, ranked second only to the Bharat Ratna in terms of national honor, are bestowed in three categories: Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri. Launched by the Indian government in 1954, and named in 1955, these awards are presented annually by the President of India. They recognize outstanding service across various fields including arts, literature, education, sports, medicine, social service, science, engineering, public affairs, civil service, commerce, and industry. These honors are open to all individuals regardless of race, occupation, location, or gender. However, government employees from PSUs, excluding doctors and scientists, are ineligible.
In a move to make these awards more accessible to the public, the current NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is contemplating rebranding the awards as 'People's Padma'.
