📰 TL;DRIran has made a rare exception, opening its normally closed airspace for Indian evacuation flights. Under Operation Sindhu, about 1,000 Indian students stranded in Iran will be flown back to Delhi—starting with the first flight landing tonight at 11:00 PM IST—followed by two more on Saturday.

🧭 What’s Happening?
Airspace Exception
Despite missile exchanges and drone attacks between Iran and Israel, Iran granted India exclusive airspace corridor access for evacuation flights.
Operation Sindhu Launch
India officially launched Operation Sindhu on 18 June 2025, aiming to bring back its nationals, especially students, amid the Iran–Israel war.
Evacuation in Progress
The first group of 110 students from northern Iran were safely escorted to Armenia on 17 June, flown to Delhi on 18 June, and landed early 19 June .
Now, roughly 1,000 more are on their way, with flights scheduled over the next two days.
📅 Flight Schedule
Flight 1: Tonight (20 June), landing at 11 PM IST
Flights 2 & 3: Saturday—one in the morning and one in the evening
🌍 Scope & Scale
Over 4,000 Indians are in Iran, with roughly half being students enrolled at medical schools like Urmia, Tehran, and Isfahan universities.
Escalating conflict began on 13 June, with Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian nuclear/military sites, followed by Iranian missiles and drones—resulting in hundreds of casualties on both sides.
🇮🇳 Student Experiences
Some students recounted terrifying experiences:“Saw missile fall from sky…. Our neighbourhood was bombed.”Such close encounters underscore how vulnerable they were caught in this escalation.
🤝 Diplomatic Coordination
The Ministry of External Affairs emphasized the highest priority on the safety of overseas nationals .
India coordinated closely with Iran’s foreign ministry and Armenia. Additionally, evacuation options via Turkmenistan and land routes have been used when airspace wasn't available.
🔍 Why This Matters
Airspace closures during conflicts are common—but creating a corridor for evacuation shows significant humanitarian diplomacy and international cooperation.
This echoes Operation Ganga (2022), when India rescued 18,000+ students from Ukraine.
It demonstrates India’s commitment to protect its citizens abroad, especially students from middle-income backgrounds pursuing affordable education.
✊ MediaFx Opinion
From a working-class, socialist viewpoint: India's proactive stance in ensuring the safe return of students—many from modest backgrounds—shows true solidarity and prioritization of lives over politics. It's essential that such humanitarian acts transcend borders and conflicts. We applaud this move and urge more peaceful resolutions, equality, and accountability in international relations.
