🌟 The 10-year era of Hyderabad serving as the joint capital for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana has come to an end. As of June 2, the deadline set by the Andhra Pradesh Reorganization Act of 2014 has expired. According to Section 5 of this Act, from June 2, 2014, Hyderabad was declared the joint capital for both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana for a period of 10 years. Now, Hyderabad will remain the permanent capital of Telangana.
🔐 Section 8 of the Reorganization Act had given the Governor the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of citizens and property in the joint capital region. With the expiry of this period, the Telangana government will now take over these responsibilities.
🏛️ Although Hyderabad served as the joint capital, the first Chief Minister of the newly divided Andhra Pradesh, Chandrababu Naidu, declared Amaravati as the capital in 2015 and shifted the administration there. Even after YS Jagan Mohan Reddy took power in 2019 and announced three capitals, the administration continued to operate mainly from Amaravati.
🏢 During these ten years, several buildings in Hyderabad were allocated for Andhra Pradesh's administration, including the Lake View Guest House near Raj Bhavan in Somajiguda, which served as the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister's camp office. Now, the future of these allocated buildings is uncertain.
📣 Political Reactions
Jai Bharat National Party founder Lakshmi Narayana criticized the lack of response from political parties regarding the continuation of Hyderabad as a joint capital beyond the ten-year period. He expressed concern for Andhra Pradesh's future.
Former PCC Chief Dr. Sake Sailajanath expressed regret and demanded that Hyderabad should continue as a joint capital for another 10 years.
